Calvin Hamler is a Wall Street finance professional with a background as a NASDAQ market maker, risk arbitrage trader, money manager and independent futures trader.  A Summa Cum Laude graduate in finance and economics from the University of Denver, Mr. Hamler is experienced in all facets of mortgage banking as an owner / operator.  He has earned the well-respected AMP (Accredited Mortgage Professional) designation from the Mortgage Bankers Association of America and served on the board of directors of the Colorado Mortgage Lenders Association in 2008.  Mr. Hamler is actively engaged with his peer network in the local and national mortgage and banking communities.

Mr. Hamler co-founded and served as CEO and Managing Member of an 8-year old independent mortgage banking company that began as a two-person startup.  He established and implemented the overall strategy and vision, built corporate culture, managed the firm’s capital, and oversaw the operation of over 640 employees at the company’s peak.  Utilizing a multi-channel originations platform consisting of four direct lending call centers, a boutique retail branch network and a wholesale sales channel, Mr. Hamler’s operation originated and funded over $2.6 billion in exclusively FHA / VA and conventional conforming residential loan production across a 30-state footprint, generating over $80 million in revenue. 

Mr. Hamler built his company’s mortgage banking operations center from the ground up, relying heavily on technology and a robust IT staff of software engineers and project managers to develop proprietary systems.  He assembled a seasoned compliance staff that included six on-staff attorneys and veteran industry compliance professionals.  Leveraging his capital markets expertise, Mr. Hamler built his own secondary marketing / capital markets trading and hedging operation from the ground up, hedging the company’s loan pipeline internally.   The end result was a distinct competitive advantage by employing the most sophisticated forms of secondary market delivery, including AOT (Assignment of Trade) and co-issuance of mortgage backed securities, selling directly to Fannie Mae.

More recently, Mr. Hamler co-founded VC Mortgage Banking Equity Group (“VCMB”), where he serves as Managing Partner.   VCMB is a Denver, Colorado-based residential mortgage banking management team with 25 years of experience backed by a multi-million dollar private equity investor group.  At VCMB, Mr. Hamler focuses on partnering with and educating commercial banks interested in residential mortgage banking.  By partnering with VCMB, banks are able to dramatically improve their bottom line performance, conservatively diversify their consolidated balance sheet with quality assets that require relatively low risk-based capital treatment, and more quickly and conservatively achieve their CRA (Community Reinvestment Act) objectives.  In addition, VCMB is able to help banks rapidly diversify and expand the deposit liabilities on their balance sheet, significantly augmenting existing deposit gathering strategies while strengthening bank customer retention and portfolio defense efforts.

Mr. Hamler and the VCMB management team recognize that each bank’s path to success is unique.  Structuring a mortgage banking partnership that is in full alignment with the bank’s overall strategic vision and unique circumstances is critical.  VCMB is able to bring private equity capital to the table when necessary to become a true equity partner in helping a bank achieve its long term objectives.

Whether a bank needs help with its deposit gathering strategy, diversification of the assets on its balance sheet, diversification of its sources of income, new products and services to offer existing customers, or a method by which to put excess liquidity on the bank’s balance sheet to good use, Mr. Hamler and VCMB are able to prioritize these objectives to maximize bank shareholder value.
